How to configure an LPR Port for use with an HP Designjet 2800CP or 3800CP printer on a Windows NT 4.0 system.

Solution

Configure an IP address on the EFI Fiery RIP, and enable LPD Printing service. Each device on an IP network must have a unique IP address. It is the responsibility of the network administrator or the end user to properly assign IP addresses to devices on the network. The RIP’s default IP address 127.0.0.1 cannot be used.

The ping command performed from a DOS prompt may test communication with the IP address: ping <IP address>. Take the following steps to solve this problem:

1. Verify the installation of the Microsoft (R) TCP/IP printing service:
   1. From the Taskbar, click Start, Settings, and Control Panel.
   2. From Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.
   3. Select the Services tab from the Network Dialog box.
   4. If the Microsoft TCP/IP Printing option is not listed, click Add Microsoft TCP/IP Printing in the Select Network Service dialog box, and OK (a prompt may appear asking for a Windows NT disk or CD-ROM to be used to install files).
   5. Click Yes when asked to restart the system.
2. Create a Microsoft LPR port using the following steps:
   1. If no printer driver icon for the EFI Fiery X2 exists in the Printers window, double-click Add Printer, and install the driver from the user software CD, connecting it to LPT1.
   2. Right-click the Printer icon and select Properties.
   3. Click the LPR Port from the Printer Ports dialog box, and select New Port.
   4. In the dialog box labeled Name or address of server providing lpd enter the IP address of the EFI Fiery X2. In the dialog box labeled Name of printer or print queue on that server type print_djcp or hold_djcp. Some operating systems may require the print queue to be named print_DJCP or hold_DJCP.
   5. Click OK to close the Add LPR Compatible Printer dialog box.
   6. Click Close to close the Printer Ports dialog box.
   7. Right-click the Printer icon, and select Properties.
   8. Click the General tab, and Print Test Page to verify communication.
